'Companera' by Julia Debarrioz - Book Review

After coming from watching 'Diableros' on Netflix I needed a book series like it. What I got was so much more in the form of Julia Debarrioz’s ‘Companera’. A rich world run with werewolves, vampires, even the possible - witch, and a bounty hunter team called the PCT who try to keep them in line. Our main Dakota del Toro was the real deal. I absolutely loved everything about her. It’s been a while since I’ve read a well-balanced female character who wasn’t all tough I can do bad all by myself so no one can hurt me. She was passionate about her job, well-aware of her strengths, her past pain but in the same vein wasn’t afraid to give her heart a chance and be vulnerable. She was a sharp, smart cookie and her banter with the classy, handsome art gallery curator, Diego *sigh* I could watch their flirty word match all day. Diego was the perfect match for her. He was respectable, calm, soft, strong and - a sure thing.

This world was so well thought out I didn’t want to leave it. I could picture myself in the middle of New Mexico in the fray, taking down werewolves, in a vampire’s den (castle), rescuing women, falling slowly in love – It was awesome. You fall in love with every character good and bad because this beautiful beginning of a novel breathes life into them. You either want to love them and protect them at all cost or surely get rid of them never to wrought havoc on this town ever again. The mythology and magic behind the vampire left me wanting to know more about their life and history. It was so intriguing and the connections and questions it brings up with Dakota is like dangling a carrot in my mind. I want it. I want to learn more about the how and the why. So book two is definitely getting read.

Thank you, Julia. It's been a while since I've been this excited about a book series.

I give this book: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
